Cat Wu, who led product for Claude Code at Anthropic, said on November 5 that she is joining OpenAI. She will lead product management for the company's core products group and report to Thibault Sottiaux, who runs Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Greg Brockman welcomed her publicly. Her stated focus is building agents that can be trusted to run reliably.
The move is small in headcount and large in signal. Wu helped shape one of Anthropic's most closely watched products, and she is now going to work on the direct competitor. Both companies have made coding agents a centrepiece of their enterprise pitch, and the people who know how to ship those products are scarce.
A thinning bench
According to a Business Insider account relayed by The Next Web, Wu is one of several departures from the Claude Code team in the space of a couple of weeks, following Thariq Shihipar and Anthony Morris. Reports differ on the exact sequence and timing, so the tally is less important than the direction: talent is flowing toward whoever is hiring hardest, and right now that is OpenAI.
The hire lands as Meta is also buying its way into the field, having just acquired the coding-agent tool Conductor and folded its founder into Meta Superintelligence Labs. The contest is being fought on two fronts at once, for the products and for the people who build them.
Timing that stings
For Anthropic, the loss comes at a delicate moment. The company has filed to go public, and a public offering tends to make retention harder, not easier, as vesting schedules and new opportunities pull in different directions. Anthropic has not commented on the departures.
None of this settles which coding agent wins. It does show how the race is being run. The models are converging, so the edge increasingly comes from product judgment, and that judgment walks out the door one hire at a time.
