OpenAI has given ChatGPT its own presentation tool. The new Slides feature, which began rolling out on Thursday, lets people generate a deck and then edit the text, images, shapes and charts directly, or hand the changes back to ChatGPT with an instruction. According to OpenAI's release notes, teammates can work on the same deck at once and leave comments, and the finished file exports to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides from the web.

Access is limited at first. OpenAI is opening it to eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users who have Space access, the shared workspace it has been building out for teams. Alongside Slides, the company said Pro users are getting faster responses and better handling of parallel agents, part of a steady widening of what sits inside the ChatGPT window rather than in a separate app.

That last point is the real story. For a while now ChatGPT has been drifting from a chatbot toward something closer to a workspace, a shift that was obvious when OpenAI rebuilt the interface around GPT-6 and an interface that assembles itself. Slides is the natural next piece. Most knowledge work still passes through documents, spreadsheets and decks, and whoever owns the place those files are made owns a great deal of the working day.

The target is not subtle. Microsoft has been threading Copilot through PowerPoint, and Google has been turning Gemini into a coworker that lives inside Workspace. A pile of startups, from Gamma to Canva, already pitch AI deck-building as their whole product. OpenAI arriving with a native slides tool inside the most-used chatbot is less a new idea than a direct challenge to all of them on the same ground.

Whether it sticks depends on the boring parts. Presentation software lives or dies on fiddly details, the stubborn text box, the chart that will not align, the template that has to match a company's brand. Generating a rough deck from a prompt is the easy half. The reason people stay inside PowerPoint and Google Slides is everything that comes after the first draft, and that is the ground OpenAI now has to win.
