Google has given its Gemini assistant a new job title. At the company's Gemini at Work 2026 event on Wednesday, Alphabet introduced what it calls a universal Gemini Agent for the workplace, a single assistant meant to carry out multi-step tasks rather than just answer questions one at a time.

According to Bloomberg, the agent operates inside Google's own apps, reaching into Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar to do its work. CBS News reported that it can write and run code, generate images and other media, and pull together information across a company's systems. The part that stands out: Google says the agent's sub-tasks can coordinate and run over the course of several days, not a single session.

From chatbot to colleague

The framing is deliberate. For two years the dominant metaphor for these tools was the chat window, a place you visit, type a question, and leave. Google is betting the next phase looks more like delegation. You hand over an objective, the agent breaks it into pieces, and it reports back when the work is done or when it gets stuck.

That is the same direction OpenAI took at its DevDay in late September, when it showed off always-on agents, and the one Microsoft chose when it rebuilt Copilot around a standing agent of its own. Three of the largest software companies in the world are now selling roughly the same promise within weeks of each other.

Still behind glass

For now the universal agent is a preview aimed at businesses rather than a feature sitting in everyone's inbox. Google did not publish general pricing or a firm release date, and the demonstrations were curated. The record on agents that act on their own is also mixed. Autonomy sounds appealing until an assistant sends the wrong email or edits the wrong document, and Google has spent much of the past year reassuring customers that an agent only touches data the user could already see and only takes actions the user has authorised.

It arrives as Google is also tightening the free end of its lineup, having narrowed what free Gemini users can run, and shortly after the launch of its Gemini 4 frontier model. The model race gets the headlines. The quieter contest, over whose agent companies actually let loose inside their email and files, may matter more.
