Anthropic appears to be going back for seconds. The company is reportedly in talks with the British data-centre operator Nscale over a second compute agreement worth around $45 billion, according to TechCrunch and Reuters. The new deal would cover a second building at Nscale's site in West Virginia and run on Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips.
If it closes, it would roughly double a commitment the two sides struck only weeks ago. In August, Bloomberg reported that Anthropic had agreed to a six-year rental worth about $45 billion covering roughly 460 megawatts at Nscale's Monarch campus in West Virginia, taking the first of three planned buildings. Microsoft had earlier signed a letter of intent for capacity at the same site, then walked away over the summer, which freed up the space for Anthropic. Capacity from the Nvidia chips is expected to come online in late 2027.
Neither company has confirmed the latest talks, and the figures are sourced to people familiar with the discussions rather than official statements. Nscale is itself preparing a US listing, and an Anthropic contract of this scale would be the largest single entry in its order book.
A spending race with no obvious ceiling
The deal fits a pattern that has defined Anthropic's year: borrow and commit at a scale that would have looked reckless not long ago, on the bet that demand for its models keeps climbing. The company recently lined up $60 billion in debt to secure chips, and it is heading toward an IPO in November that will put those numbers in front of public investors.
It also lands on the same morning that OpenAI is reportedly rushing a $30 billion raise to get ahead of that IPO. The two companies are not only competing for customers and researchers. They are competing for the finite supply of advanced chips, the land and power to house them, and the capital to pay for all of it.
The open question is how long lenders stay comfortable with the arithmetic. Some have already grown wary of writing the biggest cheques, as when a group of banks pulled back from a $5 billion data-centre loan. A second Nscale deal would show that, for now, Anthropic can still find the money. Whether it can keep finding it is the test the coming months will set.
