Visa announced on April 8 that it has opened its payment infrastructure to AI agents, letting them complete purchases autonomously on behalf of consumers. The platform, called Intelligent Commerce Connect, handles tokenization, authentication, spend controls, and dispute resolution through a single integration point that works with both Visa and non-Visa cards.
The move is a concrete signal that the shift toward agentic AI is no longer hypothetical. An AI shopping agent needs somewhere to spend money. Visa's pitch is that its network, which processes around 300 billion transactions a year across 150 million merchant locations, is the natural place for that to happen.
The platform supports four named agent protocols: Trusted Agent Protocol, Machine Payments Protocol, Agentic Commerce Protocol, and Universal Commerce Protocol. That breadth matters. Rather than betting on one agentic standard winning out, Visa is positioning itself as the settlement layer regardless of which protocol agents end up using.
"Intelligent Commerce Connect brings that same, trusted payment acceptance infrastructure into the emerging world of AI-driven commerce, so businesses can let AI agents buy on behalf of consumers, securely and at scale," said Andrew Torre, Visa's President of Value-Added Services.
Pilot partners already on the platform include AWS, Highnote, and Diddo. General availability is expected in June 2026.
The platform also lets consumers set spending limits and preferences that AI agents must respect, including preferred payment methods, promotions, and loyalty points. That consumer-control layer matters for adoption. People are generally more willing to let an AI agent book a flight than to let one spend freely with no guardrails at all.
There is a competitive angle worth watching. Mastercard and PayPal have both signaled interest in the agentic payments space. Visa moving first with a dedicated infrastructure product is a claim to become the default rails for AI commerce before any alternative can establish one.
