A humanoid robot named TianGong Ultra ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds this week, a figure quicker than Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record. It happened at the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, and the machine did not stop at one record. Over roughly two hours, it lowered the mark five times.
TianGong Ultra is built by X-Humanoid, a Beijing robotics outfit. The games opened on the evening of August 22 at the National Speed Skating Oval, the venue nicknamed the Ice Ribbon from the 2022 Winter Olympics. Organisers put the field at more than 2,000 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries, competing in 51 events that ranged from sprinting to football to table tennis.
Why the headline number needs an asterisk
A robot clocking 9.32 seconds is a real engineering result, and it is worth being honest about what it does and does not mean. This was not a robot lining up in blocks and running the way a sprinter does. Humanoid machines cover a track under carefully managed conditions, often with human handlers nearby and with hardware tuned for exactly this task. The number measures progress in balance, actuation and real-time control, not a like-for-like win over a human athlete.
That said, the trend underneath the stunt is the interesting part. Getting a two-legged machine to move at speed without falling over is one of the harder problems in robotics, and the field has been closing the gap quickly. A year ago these events were novelties full of tumbles. This year the robots are running, kicking and, occasionally, breaking records that used to belong to us.
China's humanoid push keeps accelerating
The games sit inside a much larger Chinese bet on humanoid robots. Investors have been pouring money into the sector at a pace that looks a lot like the early electric-vehicle boom. XPeng's robotics arm just raised more than $900 million at a valuation above $6 billion, and Unitree, another of the field's marquee names, soared on its Shanghai debut. A record-setting sprint in a made-for-television arena is, among other things, a very effective advertisement for an industry that wants to be taken seriously.
For now, the right way to read TianGong Ultra's run is as a marker of how fast the hardware is improving, not as proof that robots have outrun humanity. The machines are getting good at moving. Whether they can do anything useful once they arrive is the question the next few years will answer.
