While much of the tech industry spent this year cutting jobs and crediting AI for the savings, Tata Consultancy Services is doing something closer to the opposite. On 12 July the company said it would build a corps of up to 8,900 forward-deployed engineers, specialists who sit inside a client's business and do the unglamorous work of making AI actually run there.
TCS is India's largest IT services firm. Chief executive K Krithivasan told reporters he wants forward-deployed engineers to make up 1 to 1.5 percent of the company's associates, which against its end-June headcount works out to somewhere between 5,900 and 8,900 people. The role is less about building models and more about plumbing. If a bank wants an AI system for customer service, a forward-deployed engineer studies its existing software, data and workflows before fitting a model into that specific environment.
A bet that integration beats automation
The interesting part is the reasoning. A common fear about AI is that it eats the outsourcing business, since a model that writes its own code or answers its own tickets does not need a contractor to do it. Krithivasan is wagering the reverse. "What you need is a deep knowledge of the customer environment to make it work," he said. "That is where we differentiate ourselves." In his telling, the harder AI gets to deploy well, the more valuable the people who can deploy it become.
TCS is backing the theory with its wallet in another way too. After years of growing almost entirely on its own and shunning deals, the company said it is now hunting for acquisitions in AI, data security and cybersecurity. For a firm as conservative as TCS, that is a real shift in posture.
Whether the bet pays off is an open question. The same automation TCS wants to install for clients could eventually thin the ranks of the engineers installing it.
