Shopify used its Winter '26 release, which it is calling Renaissance, to make a bet about where online selling is heading. The update bundles more than 150 changes, and the through line is agentic commerce: software that does the merchant's work rather than merely speeding it up. The Fintech Times described the edition as a push from simple automation toward AI that acts on a shop's behalf.
A storefront from a sentence
The headline feature is an AI store builder. A merchant types what they want and the system generates a working storefront, from layout to banner art, without anyone touching code. Shopify's pitch is that the tool lays the foundation quickly so the owner can spend their time on the parts that need judgement. The store still opens in the normal editor afterward, so the output is a starting point, not a finished shop nobody chose.
Sidekick, the company's commerce assistant, has grown teeth to match. It can now edit a theme, adjust pricing rules, manage inventory strategy and draft campaigns, and a new feature the company calls Pulse watches a store and flags trouble before the owner notices it. Voice chat and screen sharing have been added as well, which move Sidekick from a text box toward something closer to a colleague looking over your shoulder.
Selling inside the chatbot
The most forward looking piece is Agentic Storefronts, which places a merchant's products directly inside conversations on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. The logic is plain enough. If shoppers increasingly start with a question to an assistant rather than a search engine, a store needs to be answerable there, in the dialogue, at the moment the question is asked.
Shopify is not the only platform chasing this. Amazon recently opened its seller tools to outside AI agents, and the broader race to put a capable assistant between the buyer and the catalogue is well underway. What Shopify is offering its roughly two million merchants is a way to staff that race without hiring. Whether small shops want an agent setting their prices while they sleep is the question the next few months will answer.
