Samsung Electronics has raised prices for its contract chipmaking business by as much as 15 percent on new orders, Tom's Hardware reported on 19 August. The increase is a plain read on where the AI hardware market has gone. There is more work than the world's factories can take, and the companies that make chips for hire can finally charge for the scarcity.

Wafers from Samsung's 5-nanometre process rose 10 to 15 percent, while its older 8-nanometre line climbed close to 10 percent, according to the report. That follows a separate increase in July on its 4-nanometre process, where customers in China and the United States saw prices go up around 10 percent.

Pricing power borrowed from a rival

Samsung's leverage comes mostly from someone else's problem. TSMC, which dominates leading-edge manufacturing, has had its most advanced capacity absorbed by AI orders, and buyers who cannot get a slot there are turning to the next option. As The Next Web noted, Samsung has reportedly taken more orders than it can fill, with especially heavy demand from Chinese customers.

For Samsung, the timing is a relief. Its foundry arm has lost money since 2022 and holds only about 7 percent of global foundry revenue, against more than 70 percent for TSMC. A business that spent years discounting to win work is now in a position to raise prices without losing it.

The cost keeps moving downstream

Higher wafer prices do not stay with the chipmakers. They flow into the accelerators and processors that fill data centres, and from there into the budgets of the companies renting all that compute. The industry has spent the year raising enormous sums to pay for the build-out, from Nvidia's push to fund $500 billion of infrastructure to Intel's $15 billion stock sale. A foundry price rise adds to the same bill.

It also says something about the shape of the boom. When the binding constraint was chip designs, the story was about who had the best architecture. Now the constraint is capacity, and the advantage shifts toward whoever can actually make the things. That is a quieter kind of power than a flashy model launch, and for the moment it belongs to the foundries.
