Perplexity Launches an Always-On AI Agent for Mac

Perplexity released Personal Computer for Mac on April 16, a feature that turns a compatible Mac into a continuously running AI agent that can read files, manage email, check calendars, and operate across native apps without a human at the keyboard.

The idea is as much about ambient availability as raw capability. Personal Computer runs in the background at all times. Activating it requires pressing both Command keys simultaneously, after which you give it a task by text or voice. MacRumors reports that Perplexity recommends the Mac mini as the ideal hardware: something left on permanently, not a laptop you close at night.

The system integrates with iMessage, Apple Mail, Apple Calendar, local file systems, and web browsers. According to 9to5Mac, it orchestrates up to 20 AI models under the hood depending on the task. A request to summarise unread emails and schedule a follow-up can pull together multiple apps, multiple models, and multiple file operations in a single step.

Personal Computer is exclusive to Perplexity Max, the $200-per-month subscription. It does not extend to the $20-per-month Pro plan, which puts it firmly in the enterprise and power-user category for now.

Safety and competition

The safety design is worth noting. Files are handled in a sandboxed environment, actions are auditable and reversible, and the system requires user confirmation before any sensitive operations. How those controls hold up under real-world use at scale is an open question, but the intent is visible in the architecture.

The competition is significant. Apple Intelligence, OpenAI's computer use features, and Google's Project Astra are all pushing toward the same vision of an AI layer that knows your machine. Perplexity's argument is that its core search and research capability makes it better at tasks requiring real, current information. Whether that justifies $200 a month over what Apple ships with the OS remains to be seen.
