OpenAI has doubled the usage limits on its ChatGPT Pro plans, a reversal that followed a sharp backlash from paying customers. The change covers the $100, $200 and $500 Pro tiers along with Business Premium, and it lands mostly on ChatGPT Work and the Codex coding tool, where heavy users had been bumping into their ceilings. Prices stay where they are. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex, announced the move on X, and it was picked up by BleepingComputer and Android Authority.
What provoked the anger was a plan going the other way. OpenAI had intended to shrink the included allowance for existing $200 subscribers by roughly half. Customers who had built workflows around that budget pushed back, and the company scrapped the cut.
The fine print is contested
Exactly who gained what is not fully clear, and the reporting disagrees. Several outlets say the $200 tier was doubled along with the others. A close reading of Sottiaux's post suggests the $200 allowance was simply left as it was rather than raised, with the planned reduction cancelled. OpenAI has not published the actual numbers for any tier, which is part of why the accounts differ. ChatGPT Plus, the entry-level paid plan, was not affected.
A single pool is coming
The more consequential shift is structural. On eligible plans, ChatGPT Work and Codex already draw from a shared allowance, and OpenAI has signalled that in the coming weeks it will unify usage limits for ChatGPT and Codex into one pool, a change reported to begin rolling out around December. For developers who bounce between chatting and coding all day, that removes a wall. It also makes the limit harder to reason about, since a long Codex session now eats into the same budget as everything else.
The episode reads as a pricing correction under pressure, and it fits the pattern of a market where the big labs keep adjusting what a subscription buys. We traced the enterprise side of that contest, the quieter price war between OpenAI and Anthropic, last month.
