Every time scientists map a brain in finer detail, the same hope resurfaces. If we can chart every neuron and every connection, maybe one day we could copy a mind onto a computer and live on inside it. This week's news that researchers built a complete wiring map of a fruit fly brain, all 166,000 neurons of it, has revived the question. So how close are we, really, to uploading a human mind?

The honest answer is: not close at all. It is worth being clear about why.

A map is not a mind

The fruit fly connectome is a static diagram of where the wires go. It does not capture the electrical activity running through those wires moment to moment, the strength of each connection as it shifts with experience, or the chemistry of neurotransmitters and hormones that shapes how signals flow. A wiring diagram of a city's roads tells you nothing about the traffic on a given Tuesday. Your mind is the traffic.

A human brain has around 86 billion neurons, each with thousands of connections, for something on the order of 100 trillion synapses. That is roughly half a million times the neuron count just mapped in the fly, and the fly took years of imaging and AI-assisted tracing on a brain you could lose on a fingertip. Scaling that to a human brain at the same resolution is not a matter of waiting a few product cycles.

The harder problem underneath

Suppose you could scan a whole human brain down to the synapse. You would still face a deeper problem. Nobody knows whether a static snapshot contains enough to reconstitute a person. Memory and personality may depend on details a frozen map cannot preserve, including the precise timing of signals and processes happening inside individual cells. Neuroscientists genuinely disagree about how much you would need to copy, and no experiment yet settles it.

Then there is the question the engineering cannot answer. Even a perfect simulation of your brain would be a copy. It might believe it is you, but the original you would still be sitting there, un-uploaded. Whether that copy is "you" in any meaningful sense is a philosophical puzzle that has been argued for centuries, and no amount of imaging resolution resolves it.

What is actually true

Connectomics is real science with real payoffs. Mapping brains helps researchers understand how circuits produce behavior and disease, and the AI tools that make it possible are a genuine leap. That is the story worth telling. Mind uploading and digital immortality remain firmly in the realm of speculation, closer to philosophy and science fiction than to anything on a lab's roadmap. Progress on the fly is a triumph for neuroscience. It is not a step toward escaping death, and treating it as one only muddies what the researchers actually achieved.
