Search interest in "2027" as an AI milestone keeps climbing, and it is not hard to see why. A steady drumbeat of predictions says superintelligence, a machine that outperforms the best humans at nearly everything, is only a year or two away. It is a genuinely unsettling idea, so it is worth being clear about what these forecasts are and what they are not. They are informed guesses. They are not measurements, and they are not a consensus.

Where the 2027 date comes from

Much of the specific talk about 2027 traces to AI 2027, a detailed scenario published by a group of forecasters that imagined a fast takeoff, with AI systems rapidly improving one another until they slip beyond human control. It was influential precisely because it was concrete. But a scenario is a story about one possible future, not a schedule. Tellingly, one of its own authors, Daniel Kokotajlo, has since said things are moving somewhat slower than the scenario assumed and now points to something more like 2030.

Prominent lab leaders do make near-term claims. Anthropic's Dario Amodei has argued powerful AI could arrive around 2026 or 2027. Microsoft AI's Mustafa Suleyman has said many white-collar tasks could be automated within a year or two. Elon Musk has offered even shorter timelines. These are serious people, and the claims deserve to be taken seriously. They are also, by nature, the views of those most invested in the outcome.

What the broader field actually expects

Widen the lens and the picture cools considerably. Google DeepMind's Shane Legg puts roughly even odds on a minimal form of AGI by 2028. His colleague Demis Hassabis has repeatedly said five to ten years, which lands closer to 2030 or beyond. On the forecasting platform Metaculus, the crowd currently puts about a 25 percent chance on AGI by 2029 and a coin flip by 2033. That is a dramatic acceleration from where those same forecasts sat a few years ago, but it is a long way from "next year."

There is a deeper problem underneath the numbers, which is that nobody agrees on what is being predicted. "Superintelligence" and "AGI" have no shared definition. Today's models can ace benchmarks and still stumble on ordinary tasks that require doing something reliably over a long stretch, in the messy real world, without supervision. Passing exams is not the same as holding down a job, and the gap between the two is exactly where the confident timelines tend to fall apart.

How to read the forecasts

So is superintelligence arriving by 2027? The honest answer is that no one knows, and anyone who tells you they do is selling a prediction as a fact. The systems are improving quickly, faster than most experts guessed even two years ago, and that alone is worth paying attention to. But a specific date, especially a very near one, says more about the confidence of the person offering it than about anything settled in the science. It belongs in the same careful bucket as other dramatic AI claims we have examined, including the recurring panic that an AI has already escaped and gone rogue. Watch the capabilities. Discount the countdown.
