The claim shows up everywhere now, usually under a headline about atrophy: lean on AI and your brain will go soft. It is a tidy fear, and unlike a lot of AI panic it points at a real study. So it is worth asking plainly. Is there evidence that using tools like ChatGPT actually degrades your thinking, or is this the calculator scare in modern dress?
What the research actually found
The study everyone cites is "Your Brain on ChatGPT," a project from the MIT Media Lab led by Nataliya Kosmyna and colleagues, released as a preprint in 2025. Researchers asked participants to write essays under three conditions: with ChatGPT, with a search engine, or with nothing but their own heads. They recorded brain activity with EEG across several sessions spread over four months.
The pattern was consistent. The people writing with an AI assistant showed weaker neural connectivity and remembered less of what they had written. Many also reported a lower sense of ownership over their own essays, and some could not accurately quote work they had produced minutes earlier. The authors coined a phrase for it: "cognitive debt," the idea that outsourcing mental effort feels easy now and quietly costs you later.
Where the myth overreaches
That sounds damning, and headline writers ran with it. But the study does not show that AI rots your brain in any permanent sense. It is a preprint that has not cleared full peer review, the sample was small, and it measured one narrow task. What it captured was disengagement, not damage. When you let a model do the thinking, you do not encode the work, much as a passenger scrolling their phone remembers a route worse than the person driving it.
None of this is new to AI. Psychologists have studied "cognitive offloading" for decades, from the way satellite navigation dulls our sense of direction to the way a saved contact stops us memorizing a number. The tool is not the villain here. The behavior is. A student who pastes a prompt and copies the answer learns little. A student who argues with the model, checks its claims and rewrites the result in their own words may come away understanding more than they would have alone.
The honest takeaway
So the fear is half right, which is exactly what makes it stick. Passive, wholesale reliance on AI does appear to weaken engagement and memory, and that matters most for people still learning how to think. But "AI makes you stupid" is the wrong lesson to draw. The evidence points at how you use the thing, not whether you touch it at all. The same assistant that may or may not make a developer faster can sharpen your thinking or quietly do it for you. Which one happens is still your choice.
