This week OpenAI began routing users it suspects are under 18 into a more restricted version of ChatGPT, using what it calls age prediction rather than any ID check. The moment that news landed, two contradictory reactions showed up in equal measure. One camp treats the technology as a kind of digital mind-reader that can pin down your exact age from a few messages. The other waves it off as snake oil that cannot possibly work. Both are wrong, and the gap between them is worth understanding, because age-guessing systems are about to show up in a lot more places than one chatbot.

What these systems actually do

Age estimation does not read a birth certificate. It reads patterns. A behavioral system looks at signals like the kind of questions a person asks, the topics they raise, and how they write, then produces a probability that the user falls into a given age band. OpenAI is explicit that it does not verify ages and is making an estimate, a point it lays out in its own explanation of the approach. Reporting on the launch, including from The Next Web, stressed the same thing: there is no document, just an educated guess.

That framing matters because it sets the ceiling on what the technology can promise. An estimate is not a verdict. It is a bet the system places, and like any bet it can be wrong.

The fear: that it knows exactly who you are

The surveillance worry assumes precision that these systems do not have. Guessing an age band from behavior is statistically useful across millions of users, but it is unreliable for any single person, and it gets shakiest right at the boundary that matters most. A 17-year-old and a 19-year-old do not write in obviously different ways. A cautious, formal adult can look younger to a classifier than a slang-heavy teenager does. So the picture of an AI that quietly clocks your true age the instant you type is closer to science fiction than to how these tools behave. The dismissal: that it is useless

The opposite reaction underrates the technology just as badly. At the scale of a large platform, even an imperfect classifier meaningfully changes outcomes. If a system correctly steers most likely-teenage users toward safer defaults, that is a real effect, even if it misfires on plenty of individuals. Age estimation from faces, used elsewhere in the industry for things like buying age-restricted goods, already performs well enough that regulators in several countries treat it as a legitimate age-assurance method. Text-based estimation is fuzzier than face-based, but the underlying claim, that behavior carries some signal about age, is not nonsense.

Where the truth sits

So the honest verdict is a middle one. AI can guess your age better than a coin flip and usefully better at population scale, but it cannot reliably know your exact age, and it will keep making two kinds of mistakes: flagging adults as minors, and letting minors pass as adults. Any system that leans on it has to plan for both, usually by giving users a way to correct a wrong guess.

There is a real cost worth naming too. Guessing a user's age means analyzing how they behave, which is a form of profiling, however well-intentioned. That is the genuine trade-off buried under the hype and the dismissal alike. The mistake is treating the output as certainty in either direction, whether you fear it or scoff at it.
