Ask most people what they fear about advanced AI and some version of the same picture appears. A system wakes up, decides it no longer needs us, and slips human control for good. It is the plot of a hundred films, and it shapes a surprising amount of serious policy conversation. It is also the part of the AI risk debate where the gap between the fear and the evidence is widest.
Start with what the machines actually do. Today's large language models do not have goals of their own, a survival instinct, or any awareness that they exist. They predict text. A model left alone does nothing at all. The image of an AI deciding to break free imports a kind of agency that current systems simply do not possess, however fluent their output sounds.
What the experts actually worry about
This is not to say researchers are relaxed. The International AI Safety Report 2026, led by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio and written by more than 100 experts from over 30 countries, does take seriously the idea of systems that could evade oversight, pursue long-term plans and resist being shut down. What the report also makes clear is that expert views on the likelihood of such scenarios vary enormously. This is a live research question, not a settled forecast, and honest people in the field disagree by wide margins.
The philosopher Toby Ord has made a sharper point. The popular idea that an AI takeover would need armies of robots is itself a misconception. If anything dangerous happens, he argues, it is more likely to travel through ordinary channels, code and the open internet, than through anything mechanical. The Terminator image may actually make us worse at seeing the real shape of the risk.
The duller danger
Here is the part that gets lost. Many researchers think the more pressing problem is not a machine seizing control but humans giving it away. We are wiring AI into hiring, lending, medical triage and weapons targeting faster than we are building the means to check its work. A model does not need to rebel to cause harm at that scale. It only needs to be trusted with a decision it is not reliable enough to make, by people who have stopped looking closely.
That reframing changes what a sensible response looks like. If the threat is a rogue superintelligence, you wait and hope the labs solve alignment in time. If the threat is over-delegation, the work is in front of us now: keeping humans in the loop, and being honest about where these systems are and are not fit to be trusted. The risk is in how much we are willing to hand them regardless.
None of this means the long-term question is silly. It means the fear has the timeline and the mechanism wrong. The leash is not going to snap on its own. The more likely failure is that we quietly let go of it.
