You have probably seen the number. Every time you ask a chatbot something, the story goes, a data center somewhere pours out a full bottle of fresh water to answer you. It is a vivid image, and it has done a lot to shape how people feel about AI's footprint. It is also shakier than it sounds.
Where the bottle came from
The widely shared figure traces back to a University of California, Riverside estimate that put a 100-word ChatGPT response at roughly 500 millilitres of water, about one small bottle. That study was real research, not a rumor. The trouble is what happened to the number afterward. It got stripped of its assumptions, applied to every query regardless of length or location, and repeated until it hardened into fact. OpenAI's Sam Altman, for his part, has said a typical query uses far less than the viral version implies.
Part of the disagreement is about what you count. A data center uses water directly to cool its servers. It also relies on electricity, and the power plants that generate that electricity consume water of their own. Add the second figure to the first and the total balloons. Jonathan Koomey, a longtime energy researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, argues that this indirect power-plant water should not sit on the data center's ledger at all, because no other industry is measured that way.
When the math goes badly wrong
Some of the scariest claims have simply been errors. Investigators looking at a widely shared figure for a Google data center in Chile found it overstated the facility's water use by a factor of a thousand, the result of a units mistake. A number that wrong is not a debate about methodology. It is just broken, and yet it traveled widely before anyone checked.
Context helps too. Agriculture accounts for around 70% of all freshwater humans withdraw. Producing a single kilogram of beef takes roughly 15,000 litres. A cotton t-shirt runs to about 2,700. Set against those numbers, the water used to answer a chatbot prompt is small, even on the higher estimates.
So is the worry fake?
Not quite, and this is where the slogan and the truth part ways. Data centers do consume real water, and the problem is local rather than global. A large facility built in a dry region, drawing on a stressed aquifer, can strain a community's supply even if its national share of water looks trivial. That is a genuine issue, and it is already producing fights on the ground. Residents near a planned Google data center in India have pushed back over water and wildlife, and those disputes will multiply as the buildout continues.
The honest version is less punchy than the meme. One chatbot question does not drink a bottle of water in any meaningful sense, and the headline figures are often inflated or plain wrong. At the same time, the industry's thirst is real where the plants actually sit. Both things can be true, and pretending otherwise, in either direction, gets in the way of the argument worth having about where these buildings go.
