The claim is intuitive, it is easy to share, and it taps a real anxiety about who pays for all this computing. It is also more contested than the confident version suggests, and worth examining piece by piece.
The part that is true
AI data centers really do consume staggering amounts of energy. By one widely cited estimate, global data center electricity use could approach 1,050 terawatt-hours in 2026, which would rank the sector somewhere around the fifth-largest electricity consumer in the world if it were a country. The AI-specific slice is projected at 70 terawatt-hours or more this year, roughly what a country like Austria uses. The Pew Research Center notes that AI-optimised chips draw two to four times the power of conventional ones, and the strain is concentrated: in 2023 data centers consumed about 26 percent of Virginia's total electricity supply.
The leap that does not follow
Heavy regional demand is not the same thing as a direct line from a data center to your bill. The link people assume, more AI means a bigger number on every household statement, is the part that does not hold up cleanly. A growing body of analysis finds the relationship is far messier, and in some markets large new electricity buyers can spread fixed grid costs across more usage and actually ease pressure on rates rather than add to it.
That is not a clean bill of health either. Where a region adds data center demand faster than it adds generation and transmission, prices and reliability genuinely suffer, a tension the Brookings Institution has flagged in its work on AI and the grid. The honest answer is that the effect depends on where you live, how your utility is regulated, and how quickly local supply keeps pace.
Why the myth sticks
The slogan version survives because both halves of the real story are awkward to fit on a graphic. Yes, AI is a serious and fast-growing load on the grid, and the build-out deserves scrutiny. No, your specific bill is not rising in lockstep with the world's GPU count. Treating a genuine infrastructure problem as a simple personal surcharge gets the politics wrong and points the worry in the wrong direction. The question worth asking your utility is not whether AI uses power, it plainly does, but whether your region is building enough supply to carry it.
