It is one of the most repeated claims in tech right now: AI has made the human programmer obsolete. Every new coding model, every slick demo, every layoff at a big software firm gets folded into the same story. The story is mostly wrong, and the evidence for why is not hard to find.
Start with what people actually do. According to the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, around 84 percent of developers now use AI tools in their work. If those tools were replacing programmers, you would expect the profession to be shrinking. It is not. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects software-engineering employment to grow by roughly 17 percent through 2033, which works out to several hundred thousand new roles, not fewer. As CNN put it in April, the demise of software-engineering jobs has been greatly exaggerated.
What is actually changing
The honest version of the story is less dramatic and more interesting. AI is not deleting the job, it is rearranging it. Developers spend less time typing out routine code and more time directing the tools that write it, reviewing what comes back, and deciding what should be built in the first place. The work is moving up a level, from writing every line to supervising the machine that drafts them.
That shift is real, and for some people it stings. The clearest casualty is the entry-level role as it used to exist. Junior hiring is down, and the old apprenticeship, where a new graduate learned the trade by grinding through simple tickets, is breaking because AI now does much of that simple work. Entry-level postings increasingly demand what used to be mid-level experience. That is a genuine problem for people trying to break into the field, and pretending otherwise helps no one. It is just not the same thing as programmers becoming obsolete.
Where the machine still falls down
There is also a hard technical floor under the hype. Current models still hallucinate, and they are most dangerous when they produce code that looks correct but hides a security hole, a race condition, or an edge case nobody tested. They struggle with novel architecture and with the messy, ambiguous business requirements that make up most real projects, the ones where the hardest task is working out what the customer actually wants. Someone has to own those decisions, and that someone is a human engineer.
A useful way to hold all of this: AI is not making developers irrelevant, it is making good ones far more productive. The likeliest future is not an empty engineering department but a smaller, sharper one, where fifteen people now ship what fifty once did. That is a real disruption worth taking seriously. It is not the robot apocalypse the headlines keep promising.
