Every few months someone declares the programmer dead. The latest round has good material to work with. AI tools now generate working features from a sentence, edit across whole codebases, and run their own tests until something passes. Anthropic says its own AI writes 65 percent of its product team's code. If the machine writes the software, the reasoning goes, what is left for the person?
Quite a lot, it turns out. The gap between that headline and the evidence is where this myth lives.
Writing code is not the whole job
The claim treats programming as typing, and typing was never the hard part. Most of software engineering is figuring out what to build: pinning down a vague request, spotting the edge case nobody mentioned, noticing that a feature has a compliance problem, deciding what not to do at all. An AI can produce a function once you tell it precisely what you need. It cannot sit in the meeting where the team discovers it has spent three weeks solving the wrong problem.
That is why working engineers tend to describe these tools as a change in the job rather than the end of it. The tedious parts shrink. The judgment parts do not. A developer who uses AI well gets more done, which genuinely shifts what the work feels like day to day, but that is not the same as the developer disappearing.
What the numbers actually show
The market is not behaving like an industry in collapse. Adoption of AI coding assistants has climbed steeply, and so has the work that the developers wielding them take on. The more honest worry is narrower than mass unemployment: the entry-level rung. Reporting through 2026 points to a sharp pullback in junior hiring, the roles whose routine work AI now covers most easily. That is a real problem, and it deserves more attention than the broad panic does, because it threatens the path by which juniors become the seniors the field still clearly needs.
This is the pattern with most AI job fears. The sweeping version, machines wiping out a whole profession overnight, keeps not happening, while a quieter and more uneven disruption goes underexamined. We found the same split in the wider claim that AI is about to trigger mass unemployment, where the evidence pointed in the same direction.
Where this lands
The useful question is not whether AI can write code. It plainly can. The question is whether writing code was ever the scarce skill, and for anyone who has shipped real software, the answer is no. The developer who should worry is not the one whose typing got automated. It is the one who never learned to do the rest of the job, the part the machine still cannot touch. For everyone else, the tools are a lever, and a lever is only worth as much as the person deciding where to put it.
