Google's Gemini app has crossed a billion monthly active users, a threshold the company says it reached faster than any product in its 28-year history. Chief executive Sundar Pichai announced the figure on 11 August, framing Gemini as the fourteenth Google service to reach a billion people and the quickest to get there.

The pace is the part worth sitting with. By Google's own count, Gemini went from roughly 400 million users in the spring of 2025 to more than 900 million a year later, then added the final hundred million in under a month. TechCrunch and Forbes both reported the milestone, with Google confirming it on its official blog.

The number Google left out

A billion monthly users is a headline figure, not a business one. Google did not disclose how many of those people pay for a subscription, and it did not break down how many arrive at Gemini deliberately versus how many meet it because it now sits inside Search, Chrome, Android and Workspace. That distribution matters. A user who opens the Gemini app to draft an email is not the same as one who sees an AI summary at the top of a search result, even if both count toward the same total.

The distinction is why the comparison with OpenAI is closer than the raw numbers suggest. ChatGPT reportedly reached a billion users earlier in the summer and still holds the larger share of standalone chatbot use. But reports point to its growth cooling while Gemini keeps climbing, helped along by the enormous surfaces Google already owns. When your assistant ships pre-installed on billions of phones, adoption and distribution start to blur.

A milestone, and a question

Google paired the announcement with a tease about what comes next, the usual signal that a new model or feature is close. The company has been reshaping the group behind Gemini as well, having recently put Koray Kavukcuoglu in charge of DeepMind and Gemini in a leadership reshuffle.

For readers keeping score in the assistant race, the takeaway is less about who crossed the line first and more about the shape of the curve. OpenAI built its lead from a standing start with a product people sought out. Google is closing the gap with one people were already standing next to. Both routes end at a billion. They do not say the same thing about loyalty.
