A Cambridge startup that uses AI to invent new materials just raised $450 million, and the backer list reads like a roll call of the industry. CuspAI closed its Series B on July 20 at a $2.6 billion valuation, up from $520 million last September. Kleiner Perkins and NEA led the round, with Jeff Bezos's Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Lux Capital, and Britain's Sovereign AI Venture Fund all writing cheques.

From search engine to foundry

CuspAI describes what it does as a search engine for materials that do not exist yet. Feed it a target, say a compound that can capture carbon or a substrate that pulls heat out of a chip, and its models propose candidate structures a lab can then try to make. The company was founded by Chad Edwards with Max Welling, a well-known machine-learning researcher, and its advisory board includes Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton.

Alongside the raise, CuspAI launched what it calls the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of more than 45 organisations that includes Nvidia, Meta, Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, and Lam Research. The idea is to pool compute, lab access, and expertise so a promising design does not die on a screen. Discovering a material and manufacturing one are very different problems, and the foundry is aimed squarely at the space between them.

Why chipmaking is the first target

The immediate focus is semiconductors. As transistors shrink, chipmakers hit physical limits that only new materials can push past, and finding those materials by trial and error is slow and expensive. CuspAI's pitch, with Nvidia as a partner, is that AI can narrow the search from millions of candidates to a handful worth putting in front of a lab.

It is a good moment to sound one note of caution. AI materials discovery has produced real hits, but the field also has a habit of announcing thousands of "new" compounds that turn out to be hard or impossible to synthesise. The value is in what reaches a factory floor, not what fills a database. A $2.6 billion valuation is a large bet that CuspAI can close that distance, and the industrial names in the Foundry suggest its partners think it can.
