The venture capital industry has just had its biggest six months on record, and two companies swallowed almost half of it. Crunchbase's tally for the first half of 2026, published this week, puts global startup funding at $510 billion. That single half-year beats the $440 billion invested across all of 2025.

OpenAI and Anthropic account for $217 billion of that figure between them. Two firms, in other words, took 43 percent of every venture dollar committed worldwide. It is a concentration of capital with few precedents in the history of private markets.

Anthropic moves to the front

Anthropic raised roughly $65 billion in the second quarter alone. On Crunchbase's Unicorn Board, which ranks the most valuable venture-backed private companies, it has now passed both OpenAI and SpaceX to sit at the top. SpaceX has effectively aged out of the ranking as its own financing matured, which cleared the path, but the sheer size of Anthropic's raise is what put it there.

The rest of the market lives in the gaps

Strip out the two leaders and the picture is still lopsided. More than 70 percent of all global startup capital in the second quarter went to AI companies, up from just under half a year earlier. Sixteen firms closed billion-dollar rounds in the quarter, together worth $108.6 billion, or 53 percent of the quarter's total. The money is not only flowing to AI, it is pooling in a handful of very large names near the top.

For founders outside that circle the read is mixed. Capital is abundant, yet investors are chasing a narrow set of bets, and a seed-stage company selling anything other than AI is competing for attention against a $65 billion raise. We saw the political version of this dynamic when OpenAI offered Washington a stake in itself. At this size, the companies stop behaving like startups and start negotiating like states.

The obvious worry is what happens if the returns do not arrive on the timeline the cheques assume. A record built on two names is only as sound as those two names. For now the flywheel is spinning, and the numbers keep getting larger.
