China appears ready to let its biggest technology firms buy Nvidia silicon again. According to a report from The Information, relayed by CNBC, Beijing's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked companies including Alibaba and ByteDance to submit their purchase plans for Nvidia's new RTX Pro 5500, and has told some of them it intends to approve the orders.

That is a notable shift. For much of this year Chinese regulators discouraged domestic firms from relying on Nvidia and pushed them toward homegrown alternatives instead. A green light, even a quiet one, suggests the calculus has changed.

The chip at the centre of it is unusual. The RTX Pro 5500 is a workstation graphics card Nvidia unveiled this month, built on the same Blackwell design as its data-centre parts and carrying 84 gigabytes of memory. Several industry executives quoted by Bloomberg expect it to fall outside current US export controls, which would let Chinese buyers acquire it without triggering Washington's restrictions. That is the loophole, if it holds.

A market both sides keep reshaping

The move reads as pragmatic on both sides of the Pacific. Chinese cloud providers still want Nvidia's software ecosystem, which no domestic chip fully matches yet. Nvidia, for its part, has watched its China revenue erode under successive rounds of controls and would welcome a legal channel back in.

None of this happens in a vacuum. Alibaba has been pouring money into its own Zhenwu accelerator, Huawei has laid out a 2027 roadmap to challenge Nvidia directly, and buyers everywhere are still trying to work out how much faster the latest Nvidia systems really are. Reuters noted it could not independently verify The Information's account, so treat the approval as signalled rather than sealed. If it firms up, it would be the clearest sign yet that the chip war has settled into managed trade rather than a hard blockade.
