OpenAI is this month opening its ChatGPT advertising business to smaller brands, removing the $200,000 minimum commitment that previously limited the program to large advertisers. The self-serve expansion marks a shift from a controlled pilot into something that looks like a full advertising platform.

The numbers from the pilot period are striking. OpenAI launched ads in ChatGPT on February 9, and by late March the program was already generating more than $100 million in annualized revenue from over 600 brands. Fewer than 7 percent of ads shown were rated "low relevance" by users, a figure OpenAI has cited as evidence that contextual placement inside a conversation produces more precise targeting than traditional search advertising.

Not every user sees them. Around 85 percent of US users on the Free and Go tiers are eligible to see ads, but OpenAI says fewer than 20 percent are shown any on a given day. The company is clearly managing the rollout carefully. Once the self-serve tier opens fully, that ratio will come under pressure from the sheer volume of advertisers entering the platform.

CNBC reported the $100 million figure in late March; Search Engine Land confirmed the April self-serve timeline. OpenAI's internal projections, according to The Information, see ad revenue reaching $2.5 billion by the end of 2026 and $53 billion by 2029, which would make it one of the largest digital advertising businesses in existence within three years.

A second revenue engine

The $53 billion figure deserves some skepticism. OpenAI has been projecting aggressive growth across several directions simultaneously, and the AI advertising market is new enough that long-range forecasts are aspirational at best. But the direction is clear: OpenAI is building a second major revenue line alongside its subscription and API business, one that scales with users rather than with enterprise contracts.

That changes the competitive picture. Google's core business is search advertising, which is currently being disrupted by AI summaries that reduce click-throughs to publishers and advertisers alike, as recent data on zero-click search makes plain. If ChatGPT becomes a viable advertising surface at scale, it creates a new front in the battle for advertising budgets, not just a new AI product. That is almost certainly what OpenAI's strategy team is focused on.

Paid subscribers to ChatGPT do not see ads. The program applies only to free and lower-cost tier users in the United States at launch.
