Base44, the app-building platform Wix bought last year, has started rolling out its own artificial intelligence model. The company calls it Base1, and the reasoning behind it says a lot about where the AI business is heading.
Until now Base44 ran on frontier models from the big labs, as most app builders do. That works, but it leaves a startup exposed. Your costs rise and fall with someone else's pricing, and your product is only as distinctive as the model everyone else can also rent. TechCrunch framed the launch around a single word that has become the industry's preoccupation: defensibility.
The numbers make the move look less reckless than it might have a year ago. Wix acquired Base44 in 2025 for around $80 million, when the company was barely six months old and had a team of eight. By May 2026 it was reporting roughly $150 million in annual recurring revenue. Founder Maor Shlomo said Base1 was trained on a dataset drawn from tens of millions of real user interactions on the platform, the kind of proprietary data a general-purpose lab does not have.
"Training and owning the model as part of our entire stack allows us a lot more optimizations on latency, cost, and efficiency," Shlomo said.
Small, specific, cheaper to run
Base1 is not trying to beat the frontier at everything. It is tuned for one job, generating working apps, using data no competitor can copy. That is the same logic pulling much of the industry toward smaller, domain-specific models that cost a fraction of a giant generalist to run. Anthropic's newly launched Claude Sonnet 5 works the same idea from the other direction, closing much of the gap with a flagship at lower cost.
The risk is plain. Training and maintaining a model is expensive and difficult, and a small in-house effort can fall behind labs pouring billions into research. Base44 is betting that owning a good-enough model tuned to its own users beats renting a great one it cannot control. Plenty of startups built on top of the big labs will be watching to see whether that bet pays off.
