A new subdomain at genai.apple.com has appeared in Apple's domain name servers, two weeks before the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference opens on June 8. The page itself is not live, but the registration is the clearest signal yet that Apple is preparing a substantive AI announcement at this year's WWDC, after a 2025 cycle in which much of what was promised at the 2024 keynote slipped or quietly vanished from the roadmap.

MacRumors's Aaron Perris first spotted the change in DNS records over the weekend. The subdomain follows Apple's usual pattern for product launch pages, where the URL is created before any content is published, then turned on at the moment of announcement. Past examples include the Vision Pro and the original Apple Intelligence rollout itself, both of which followed the same playbook.

What the announcement is expected to contain

The expected centerpiece is a rebuilt Siri. According to reports compiled by TechTimes, the new assistant will run on a custom model derived from Google's Gemini, with queries processed through Apple's own Private Cloud Compute infrastructure rather than passing directly to Google's servers. The Gemini partnership is a notable departure for Apple, which has historically preferred to ship its own models even when they lagged the frontier.

Other items being signaled for WWDC include onscreen awareness, in which Siri can act on what is currently visible on a user's display, and richer personal context, where the assistant draws on calendar, mail, and messages to answer questions about the user's own life. AppleInsider notes that both features were promised in 2024 and then quietly delayed, making this year's keynote a credibility test as much as a product reveal.

Why Apple needs this one to land

Apple has reasons to land this announcement well. The Siri overhaul missed its original ship date and became the public face of the company's perceived AI lag. Hardware sales remain strong, but Apple's software experience is increasingly being judged against ChatGPT, Google's new Gemini Spark agent, and Claude, none of which run inside the iPhone in a tightly integrated way.

A polished GenAI launch at WWDC would close that gap in messaging, even if the underlying features take another year to ship widely. Apple's marketing machine has always been better at framing a delayed feature as a deliberate choice than at hiding when it has been beaten to a feature outright.

Signals are not shipments

Whether the announcement closes the gap in practice is the open question. Apple's track record on AI features over the past two years has been to demo well and ship slowly, and several of the most ambitious features from WWDC 2024 are still rolling out region by region a year later. A subdomain in DNS is a signal of intent, not a guarantee of arrival.

The full picture lands on June 8.
