Anthropic has agreed to spend roughly $10 billion over six years on computing capacity from Volta, a cloud startup only months old, according to Bloomberg, which first identified the Claude maker as the customer. The capacity will come from a data centre in Norway managed by Volta and built in partnership with Bitdeer Technologies, a bitcoin miner that has been converting its energy sites into rentable AI infrastructure.

The companies themselves have been coy about who is buying. In its own announcement, Bitdeer described a 16-year colocation lease with Volta worth about $4.7 billion over the base term, rising to roughly $8 billion with renewal, and named only "a leading AI developer" as the end tenant. Bloomberg's reporting fills in the blank. The Tydal campus in central Norway is set to deliver around 133 gross megawatts of power, cooled by the region's cold climate and fed by its cheap hydroelectricity.

A startup backed by the right names

Volta is not a household name, and that is part of the story. The company announced a $300 million Series B this week led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter, at a $2.4 billion valuation, with Nvidia and Dell also backing it. Nvidia supplies the chips these sites are built around, so its money tends to follow demand for its own hardware. Dell provides the servers. A young firm with those relationships can promise a frontier lab something scarce right now, which is power and space that actually exists.

That scarcity is the whole point. Training and running models like Claude consumes an enormous and growing amount of electricity, and the labs have concluded they cannot wait for the usual cloud providers to build it all. Anthropic is reportedly also in early talks with Meta for a separate compute arrangement of a similar size, on top of its existing commitments with Google and Amazon. The Norway deal is one piece of a much larger buildout.

Why Norway, and why a bitcoin miner

Bitcoin miners spent years assembling exactly what AI companies now need: grid connections, permits, and buildings full of power-hungry machines. Bitdeer is one of several that have pivoted to renting that footprint to AI tenants instead. Norway adds cool air, which lowers cooling costs, and a grid heavy on renewables, which helps a company like Anthropic keep its emissions story credible while it scales.

The arrangement stacks neatly. Anthropic pays Volta, Volta leases the building from Bitdeer, and Nvidia and Dell supply the hardware inside. Each layer takes a margin, and each shifts some of the financial risk of a very expensive bet onto someone else.
