The thirteen-day free run for Claude Fable 5 is over. As of June 23, Anthropic's most capable public model is no longer bundled at no extra cost into Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, closing the complimentary window the company opened when it launched the model on June 9.
On the API the model now lists at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly double the price of Claude Opus 4.8, as several trackers noted. Anthropic has said full restoration as a standard subscription feature waits on more compute capacity.
A free window that mostly was not
The arithmetic is unkind. Subscribers were promised access from June 9 through June 22 at no charge. They did not get it. On June 12 the US government issued an export-control directive that forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and its sibling Mythos 5 for all users, and the model stayed dark until roughly June 18. Net out the outage and most paying users saw four or five days of the advertised thirteen before the meter switched on.
That sequence has defined the model's short life. Fable 5 was billed at launch as the most powerful system Anthropic had ever released to the public, then pulled within days over a reported jailbreak that worried Washington, then slowly walked back online while the company negotiated. The pricing change is the quieter coda: the model is back, it works, and now it costs.
What it means for users
For most subscribers the practical effect is simple. Hit Fable 5 today and you are paying for it, either through token billing or whatever metered tier Anthropic settles on. For developers the new rate puts Fable 5 firmly in premium territory, a model you reach for on hard problems rather than default to. Whether the capability justifies twice the Opus price is the question every team will now answer for itself, which is roughly where a turbulent month was always going to land.
