Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, an update to its mid-tier model that the company pitches as a cheaper and faster partner for everyday work rather than a run at the frontier. The release was covered by TechCrunch, CNBC, and SiliconANGLE.

Sonnet sits below Opus in Anthropic's lineup, the tier meant for high volumes of ordinary tasks where speed and cost matter more than raw capability. The new version keeps the same prices as Sonnet 5: two dollars per million input tokens, ten dollars per million output tokens, and twenty cents per million cached reads. Anthropic says it runs more than 30 percent faster than its predecessor, which it argues lowers the real cost of finishing a given task even though the sticker price is unchanged.

Built for the office, not the leaderboard

The company is steering expectations toward practical use. It describes Sonnet 5.5 as well suited to drafting documents, summarizing long material, working through spreadsheets, and fixing bugs in code. Anthropic also claims the model has a better sense of visual design, so it can tidy up interfaces and follow templates to produce slides that need little cleanup. Those are vendor claims, and buyers will want to test them against their own workloads before taking them at face value.

One detail stands out beyond the usual speed-and-price story. Anthropic says text written by Sonnet 5.5 carries an invisible watermark, a signal embedded in the output that is meant to help identify machine-written text later. As AI writing spreads into email, reports, and schoolwork, provenance is becoming its own battleground, and a built-in marker is a notable choice for a mainstream model.

A crowded release calendar

Sonnet 5.5 lands in the middle of a fast release cycle across the industry. It follows Anthropic's own Opus 5.5 flagship from a week earlier, Google's Gemini 4 entering post-training, and xAI's Grok 4.7. The pace has grown quick enough that some in the industry now talk openly about model fatigue, with new versions arriving faster than most teams can evaluate them. A faster, same-price Sonnet is Anthropic's answer to that mood: less a leap than a quieter bid to be the default choice for the bulk of the work.
