Anthropic shipped a feature on 5 August that answers a question compliance teams have been asking for a while: how do you stop an employee pasting something sensitive into a chatbot before it leaves the building? The answer is called inference hooks, a beta capability for Claude Enterprise that sends every prompt and tool-call response to the organisation's own security server for an allow-or-deny decision before Claude runs inference. The company laid it out in a post on its blog.
The clever part is where the checkpoint sits. Rather than installing agents on laptops, inference hooks moves the inspection onto Anthropic's servers, after a request leaves the client and before the model processes it. One policy layer then covers every governed surface, including chat, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork, with nothing to deploy on user devices. As Unite.AI noted, that is a meaningful change from bolt-on data-loss tools that only watch the browser.
Built to plug into what companies already run
Inference hooks uses an open, webhook-based protocol with a published schema, so a security team can point it at the same server their other tools already report to. Anthropic lists Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, Proofpoint, and Zscaler among the systems it slots into, or a company can wire up its own. The rollout controls are the sort of thing that decides whether a governance feature actually gets used: a shadow mode that always allows while teams watch what would have been blocked, role-based exclusions, percentage-based rollouts, and adjustable timeouts and failure policies.
Why it lands now
The timing is not an accident. Enterprises have spent the year discovering how much of their own AI use they cannot see, and shadow AI has become a real audit headache. Giving compliance a single inspection point, before the model reads a word, is a quieter kind of product than a new model launch, but it is the sort of plumbing that decides whether a bank or a hospital lets Claude near real work at all. For teams that have been stuck saying no, it is a way to start saying yes with conditions attached.
