Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, positioning it as something between a presentation tool and a wireframing environment for people who have never touched Figma. It is in research preview for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.

The tool converts text prompts into working prototypes, one-pagers, slide decks, and marketing assets. Feed it your company's codebase and design files, and it applies consistent brand styles across whatever it produces. Outputs can be exported as PDF, a live URL, PPTX, or sent directly to Canva.

What it actually does

Claude Design is built on Claude Opus 4.7. What sets it apart from simply asking Claude to generate HTML is the structured design understanding underneath. Rather than producing a blob of styled code, the tool builds design-aware templates that iterate conversationally.

From TechCrunch's hands-on review, the workflow runs roughly like this: describe what you want, watch an interactive prototype appear, then refine by conversation. Drop in existing brand assets and the tool adapts its output accordingly.

Who it is competing with

The obvious competition is Figma for designers, Adobe Express for marketers, and the growing category of prompt-to-website generators. Claude Design does not try to unseat professional design tools. Its bet is that most people who need a polished visual right now are not designers and never will be.

That is a reasonable bet. The more interesting question is whether the outputs are good enough to skip a human design pass entirely, or whether the tool quietly creates new work by producing something 80% of the way there that still needs refinement. Early reviewers noted outputs are clean and brand-coherent, but the research preview label suggests Anthropic is watching closely to see where it breaks.
