The fear has been circulating since large language models went public: AI will flood the internet with misinformation so convincing and so cheap that reality itself becomes unnavigable. It is an understandable worry. It is also, according to a growing body of research, not well-supported by evidence.
A commentary published in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review by researchers at Oxford, Zurich, and the ENS in Paris argues that generative AI's threat to the information ecosystem is being substantially overstated. The paper, "Misinformation Reloaded?", reviewed communication studies, cognitive science, and political science literature and arrived at four main conclusions.
First, misinformation supply already exceeds demand. The constraint is not the volume of false content available; it is that most people consume very little of it. Exposure is concentrated in a small, highly engaged subset of users who were already seeking it out. Adding more supply does not automatically find new audiences.
Second, making misinformation more polished does not obviously make it more persuasive. For AI-generated content to meaningfully shift the information landscape, it would need to be far more persuasive than ordinary human-written content. That is a high bar, and there is little evidence current AI output clears it.
Third, microtargeted manipulation, the scenario where AI models each user individually and crafts personalized propaganda, runs into structural limits. Current language models are not good enough at modeling individual preferences to make this viable at scale.
The authors also invoke the "third-person effect": the widespread tendency to assume others are easily fooled while believing yourself resistant. Moral panics about new media have consistently followed this pattern, from television to social media. The panic about AI misinformation may be another version of it.
On the other side of the ledger, a separate Science study by researchers at MIT, Cornell, and American University found that GPT-4 could durably reduce conspiracy beliefs through personalized conversations. In a study with 2,190 self-identified conspiracy believers, a single AI dialogue of around eight minutes reduced belief by roughly 20% on average, with effects holding at a two-month follow-up. About one in four participants abandoned their conspiracy belief entirely. The study won the 2026 AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize, the association's top annual award for a paper published in Science.
None of this means AI poses no information risk. The Harvard paper explicitly limits its conclusions to countries with competitive, functioning media ecosystems. In places without that, the picture could look different. The MIT researchers also noted that AI could reinforce conspiracy beliefs if misapplied.
But the most alarming scenarios, AI making misinformation unstoppable, reality becoming permanently contested, are not what the research shows. The evidence so far is more complicated than the fear, and considerably less apocalyptic.
